Chapter 13
Take a day!
Pete now stood beside his wife inside the gloomy bedroom. He leaned across her and pushed the smoking barrels of the shotgun to face the floor. âI think he is dead love,â he said, moving past her into the depths of the room, keeping his distance from what was left of the zombie.
He threw apart the old thick curtains covering himself in dust as he did so, causing a coughing fit. âWow, he has been in here a while,â Pete said and turned back to see his wife guiltily looking down upon her recent zombie kill. âI would have thought that he wouldâve at least fallen out of his chair,â
Karen just blinked. âI just killed an old man in a wheelchair,â she said in a monotone cadence.
âA zombie, dear. He wasnât alive,â Pete replied, trying to put a positive spin on it.
âBut I still shot him. He might not have been a zombie, he could have had a stroke, and could not speak properly,â she said, still not moving at all.
Pete weighed up whether to slap her back into reality. Then again, she had banged her head several times this far into their journey, so maybe not. He stood in front of her, then rested his machete on the lap of the now headless wheelchair zombie and placed his hands on her shoulders.
âHe was a zombie. He had blood leaking from everywhere,â he said and gestured back to the corpse. âWell, if he had a head that is, but he has been in this room for months by the state of it, yet he can still groan at us.â He shrugged. âI know some OAPs are a sturdy lot, but not that fucking sturdy.â
Tiredness overcame her. These past few days had become too much, her eyelids became heavy, and they started to close. âI'm so tired, Pete. We need to get to my parents and soon,â she said, her words slurring as the fatigue over powered her.
He walked over and gently removed the shotgun from her limp hands, before pulling the ammunition belt from around her. âWe will, you just need to rest so we can make a fresh start in the morning,â Pete said, and carefully guided her back to the garish pink bedroom, which seemed to be the cleanest one of them all.
Karen was placed on top of the duvet. Her husband's hands moved her onto the bed, where she instantly curled up in the foetal position. âDon't leave me, please,â she said sleepily.
Pete leaned down and placed a kiss on her forehead. âI won't be far, I just want to make sure the house is secure, and drag the dead away from the door,â he explained, and all he got back was a sleepy note as her breathing changed to that of a person in a deep sleep.
The tall man looked down at his wife before quietly moving away, closing the bedroom door behind him. He chose not to close the curtains, so when she arose, Karen could instantly see where she was.
